This local derby in perfect conditions on Friday night exhibited little of the famed rivalry that often exists between the sides. Tulla who missing over half a dozen starters were taking on a Clooney side bereft the services of Fergal Lynch, Peter Duggan, Ronan Gallagher yet all their experiments in personnel and positions paid off over the hour in Clooney. Brian Shally and Aidan Lynch were on target after three minutes for their respective sides opening scores. After the end of the first quarter the sides were deadlocked on (0-4) apiece as Shally (2) and Martin Duggan added scores with Tulla responses from Darragh Corry, Cathal Dinan and veteran Michael Murphy. Indeed over the hour Tulla had Karl Quinn, Mark Quinn and Murphy from their senior side of the mid 1990s playing in this tie.
Clooney/Quin began to dominate and took charge of the second quarter to lead (0-12) to (0-5) at the break. John Earls (3), Adrian Fleming (2), Mike Daffy and Martin Duggan as Cillian Duggan dominated the half back line for the winners. The second half was lacklustre as Clooney/Quin were never really threatened by a scoreshy Tulla side. Clooney/Quin brought on four subs and by the 46th minute were seven clear, (0-15) to (0-8). The final ten minutes saw Tulla outscore the home side (0-3) to (0-2) with Ray Stewart bagging a hat trick of frees.
Best for the winners were Shane McNamara, Enda Harrison, Cillican Duggan, John Earls. Brian Shally, Adrian Fleming and Mike McNamara. Tulla had good displays from Sean Torpey, Cathal Dinan, John Brennan, Ray Stewart from frees, Mark Quinn and Eugene Cooney.
